Today I
continued with my GIS training. Each day, I seem to learn more and more about
the power of technology and the various applications thereof. In my lessons
today we focused on how to convert GPS readings into a compatible format to be
used with GIS. Sometimes this consists of changing the minutes and seconds of
the coordinates into a decimal of degrees. Other times, we have to convert the
coordinates into a text file to be read by the GIS software. All the programs
on the computer seem to work together in a way I never realized was possible.
We even took a look at the GPS readings on my camera and how to put those
coordinates into a map. I think I’m finally getting the hang of GIS and how to
input different layers and label certain points. Tomorrow, I will finish my
lessons of the basics. Next, I have to figure out how I can apply what I’ve
learned to my research.
I learned
another thing today—fries for lunch probably aren’t a good idea before running
with a group of Kenyans. Not only did I have fries for lunch, but it was a late
lunch. Running on recently eaten fries doesn’t feel so good. The group was
bigger today and actually included some girls besides me. We didn’t go quite as
far as last time, but it felt incredibly far. I’ve learned my lesson. The next
time I go running it will be on an empty or rice filled stomach.
